The plane carrying four people, including Mr Elliott, left Samarinda on Friday morning for a 90-minute flight to survey a coalmining site, but did not reach its destination.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said local search and rescue crews confirmed they found the aircraft which had been chartered by Elliott Geophysics International.

There were no survivors reported and bodies are yet to be formally identified.

Mr Elliott was the founder and general manager of Elliott Geophysics International, a Perth survey company which has headquarters in Jakarta.

The plane had been carrying four passengers, the pilot, Marshal Basyir, surveyor Dr Elliot, co-surveyor Muhammad Rizal and a supervisor from the airforce, Captain Suyoto.
