The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) needs to “improve connectivity and accessibility” in order to attract more tourists. Republic of Indonesia minister of tourism and creative economy Mari Elka Pangestu said joint frameworks, such as public-private partnerships, should be formed to assist with the promotion of ASEAN. “In my opinion, we should prioritize strengthening domestic, regional and international connectivity and developing tourist destinations through cooperation in infrastructure building, both soft and hard infrastructure,” Ms Pangestu said. ASEAN leaders established the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2011-2015 to support the notion of ASEAN as a single tourism destination. “I see the diversity of ASEAN destinations as a strength, not a weakness,” Ms Pangestu said. As the cruise industry booms, ASEAN countries must come together and take advantage of tourism opportunities. “In order to get the cruise sector activated across ASEAN, we have a work plan that should be done by the ASEAN member states: developing cruise infrastructure; developing itineraries and routes; promoting ASEAN cruises at international trade and consumer fairs; and collaborating with international cruise organizations and associations,” Ms Pangestu said. The tourism minister was also in favour of a joint visa system to increase tourism in the region. “There is no doubt that the ASEAN common visa will increase the number of international tourist arrivals to the ASEAN region,” Ms Pangestu said. |
