There’s something about Los Angeles that keeps drawing travellers back to the city, from its saucy Spanish roots to its nearby baroque beachside environment, there’s a vibe about this place that’s simply crazy – or maybe that’s just the loom of nearby Hollywood.
Los Angeles is an amazing mix of modern mash-ups, with so much of the city to explore and so many surprises in store, don’t let the anarchic traffic snarl that is LAX deter you.
With the main precincts of Downtown LA, the Westside, Hollywood and the Beach Cities, LA is different things to different people. When planning a trip into this global city, travellers should definitely do a little research to get the most out of this city.
Starting with the district of Hollywood to the north, the movie scene is one of the city’s key tourist draws, with the famous white Hollywood sign in the Hollywood Hills, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, and the entire Sunset Strip, movie fever is definitely in the air.
Looking west to the beaches, Los Angeles is home to eight great places to surf or chill. First stop for most is the famous Venice Beach, and the lush surround neighbourhood of Venice, for that star-struck post card LA feel, then there’s Malibu’s Surfrider Beach for those perfect breaks, and of course the very family-friendly Santa Monica State Beach.
Downtown LA is the place to be for the heart of the art scene, with a wide selection of public art on display, LA has nurtured more than one artist in its time. Sports, another passion of the locals, can be found in all the Lakers, Dodgers, and Avengers dedications. On the topic of passion, shopping is a must in Downtown LA, and a trip isn’t complete without a visit to the Fashion District.
West LA is the place to relax and kick back, with much of the retail, cultural and recreational sites found to the west of the CBD. The cities of Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Bel-Air and Marina del Rey can be found on this side of town; the Westside is also the gateway to the San Fernando Valley region. Attractions such as the Getty Museum, La Brea Tar Pits and ‘The Strand’ can be found within its borders.
From one corner of the city to the next, this 150-year old city has never looked better, with little nips and tucks still happening around the city, LA is always fresh and exciting to visit. The City of Angels always manages to charm, from its exuberance to its chill-out spaces, the city can be brash against the senses. Brace yourself to be sucked into this city’s ever-shifting movements – after all, when was an angel ever predictable?
