Cashed up Taiwanese, Indonesians hit the Gold Coast

On the Indonesian and Taiwanese radar: the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is experiencing a surge in Indonesian and Taiwanese tourists, who are spending big.

Local tourism operators say they have seen an influx in visitors from the two Asian markets, with growth for the year to June up by at least 13 percent, according to Tourism Australia figures.

Reports indicate that Taiwanese travellers spent $18.2 million in the city while Indonesians have increased their expenditure by 54.7 percent to $10.3 million.

Gold Coast Tourism chief executive, Martin Winter said marketing of the Gold Coast by travel wholesalers in Taiwan and Indonesia had been impressive.

"The economies in Indonesia and Taiwan are very strong and we predicted they were emerging markets but we did not expect to reach such high targets," Mr Winter said.

Unlike Chinese travellers, who only stayed for short periods on organised tours, Taiwanese and Indonesian tourists are more comfortable with booking independent holidays.
