Tourist arrested for iguana smuggling in Galapagos

Wednesday, 11 July 2012

Ecuadorian authorities have allegedly arrested a German tourist after he was caught attempting to ‘take home’ four land iguanas from the Galapagos Islands.

The man was arrested over the weekend at Baltra Island Airport when Rangers detected a “suspicious lump” inside his bag during the x-ray process, a statement from Contours Travel read.

Airport officials are said to have found four Conolophus subcristatus iguanas during baggage inspection, a type of lizard deemed by Galapagos Park’s national director as a “vulnerable species”.

According to the report, while the German tourist was allegedly arrested for the environmental crime, the four iguanas were moved to the Park’s veterinarians where they were checked for any harm.
