One man mistook the sewing needle in his sandwich for a toothpick

Delta Air Lines has ramped up security around the production of its meals after sewing needles were found in six sandwiches on four flights from Amsterdam to the US.

One person on a flight to Minneapolis was injured after biting into a turkey sandwich, while single needles were also found in two flights to Atlanta and in one flight to Seattle.

The FBI and police at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport have opened investigations into the matter, AP reported.

Promising to cooperate with authorities investigating the incident, Delta said that it was taking the matter “extremely seriously”.

"Delta has taken immediate action with our in-flight caterer at Amsterdam to ensure the safety and quality of the food we provide onboard our aircraft,” the airline commented.

The carrier said it had removed items prepared at the Gate Gourmet facility in Amsterdam and replaced them with pre- packaged foods.
