A musical adventure set in spectacular outback country and reef side ocean
5-9 October 2012, Exmouth and the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area

Featuring performances from Etica Ensemble, Stephen Pigram, Defying Gravity, Jon Rose and more.

In October 2012 Tura New Music will present the inaugural Sounds Outback (…to Reef) Festival against the backdrop of the stunning land and seascapes of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area.  Featuring a selection of Australia’s finest musicians performing in some of the country’s most picturesque settings – Sounds Outback (…to Reef) is set to become an iconic, annual, cultural tourism event.

Sounds Outback (…to Reef) will present awe-inspiring performances at various land and offshore locations, highlighting the complex beauty of the North West Cape including the Cape Range National Park and the Ningaloo Reef.

Tos Mahoney, Tura New Music’s Artistic Director said, ‘Tura is excited to announce this new initiative as part of our award winning Regional Program. The 2012 Sounds Outback (…to Reef) Festival, which builds on the success of the Sounds Outback series at Wogarno Station, will also create opportunities to make a significant contribution to the social, cultural, educational and community lives of people living in regional centres and remote communities of the Gascoyne and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.”

Tura, in conjunction with the Sounds Outback (…to Reef) partners and sponsors, is working to deliver accessible cultural social and educational new music of the highest calibre to regional and remote communities.  Exmouth Cultural Arts Centre Inc (ECAC) is Tura’s Community Partner in the Festival.

Sponsors include the Shire of Exmouth and Gascoyne Development Commission.  The Festival’s showcase event – a concert under the stars set against the stunning sculptural backdrop of Shothole Canyon – is presented in association with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).

Chelsea Gordon, DEC’s Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area Program Manager said, “The Ningaloo Coast received World Heritage listing on June 24 2011 in recognition of its outstanding natural beauty and biological diversity.  The area offers a stunning contrast between the rich Ningaloo coral reef and the Cape Range arid landscapes.  Sounds Outback (…to Reef) provides a unique opportunity to engage with the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area.”

There are three components to the regional program:

Community Residency (3 – 5 October)
Leading Australian composer, violinist Jon Rose, will lead a community project based around his world-renowned Bowed Fence work. This collaboration with local community will be aired during the first event of the Festival. Jon Rose is the current winner of the Australia Council’s Don Banks Award.

Festival Concert Series & Associated Events (5 – 7 October)
A series of concerts engaging world-class musicians and sound artists will be presented at significant locations across the weekend, including Shothole Canyon. Artists include Stephen Pigram, Etica Quartet, Defying Gravity Percussion, Jon Rose and more.

Outback Residential Experience (8 – 9 October)
For those who want to extend their experience of Sounds Outback (..to Reef), there is the opportunity to experience an outback station when Sounds Outback travels to Bullara Station at the bottom of the Gulf for a program of installations and concert performances with Festival artists.

Skywest and Qantas run daily flights between Perth and Exmouth.
